Own Source Funded Projects

Background of Port Loko District

Local Councils have three main windows of funding, notably Own Source Revenues, Grants from Central Government and donors. Port Loko District Council being a responsible Council strongly subscribed to the prescription in the Local Government Act which makes it mandatory for Local Councils to use tax payers monies on both recurrent and capital expenditures.

In line with this dictates and lawful order, Port Loko District Council out of revenues collected in 2018 embarked on a facelift of the Council Port Loko Office which was not in a good form. The office vicinity was dilapidated and the hall was not commensurate to modern standards.

Therefore, Council ensured a thorough pavement of Council frontage, refurbished the reception and rebranded the office of the Chairman to match his status as the first gentle man of the district.

Besides, Council renovated the Conference hall, installed Air Conditioners and PA system which has not only provided a comfortable conference centre for Port Loko but also expanded on Council’s revenue base.

The Hall is gradually become a major revenue source for Council and the demand becoming high every day. The entire township now clamours to have their workshop, marriage ceremonies, birthdays and other event in Council because of these enormous changes.

In similar development, Port Loko District Council through own source has procured tricycles for Lunsar, Lungi and Masiaka to support waste collection and disposal. In addition Council has procured furniture for needy schools in Lungi and environs which has cushioned the problem of accommodation in the beneficiary schools.

Meanwhile, Council jointly with Government of Sierra Leone is supporting the construction of a town hall in Rogbere Junction and rehabilitation of SLMB School and MCHP in Kasongha in Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom.

The constriction of these buildings was a step in the right direction especially when it will now serve as a regional office for the new Northwest region. The challenge with accommodation /office space which used to plague the two aforesaid sectors is now a foregone story. The staff are now highly motivated to carry out their assigned roles and responsibilities.
